Algorithm offers judges help in making decisions

From the start of 2017, the US state of New Jersey has been using software to decide whether offenders should be released on bail before trial. Statistics prove that such decisions are often based on the judge's gut feeling. The "Public Safety Assessment" algorithm draws on the data of 1.5 million cases in the USA, evaluates the risk presented by the offender, and presents judges with advisory help. The support provided by the software aims to make the justice system fairer and more efficient.
