Snapchat has purchased the start-up Seene and will soon be able to allow users to create 3D content with people and items by using their smartphone camera. This content can then be digitized in 3D and used for other purposes. Because a conventional smartphone camera is sufficient, the 3D rendering is completed on the phone itself. This will turn smartphones into 3D scanners: the position of the surroundings is decided, the surroundings recorded, and the content reconstructed in 3D. Seene is also working on augmented and virtual reality features, which Snapchat could be able to integrate into its app in future.
