The IKEA stores in Malmö and Helsingborg are now growing lettuce in shipping containers that are connected to a hydroponic growing system. In partnership with the start-up Bonbio, IKEA uses the food waste from its own restaurants to produce the nutrient fluids for growing lettuce. One container produces around 15-20 kilograms of lettuce every day. Over the long term, other types of food will also be produced in a fully closed loop system. Fresh vegetables can be delivered all year round thanks to the temperature and light controls in the containers.
