Locusts detect bombs

Researchers at Washington University are working for the Office of Naval Research to find a way to use locusts to detect explosives. Locusts have a highly sensitive sense of smell and are able to rapidly perceive chemical changes in the area. To use their antennae, an electrode is implanted in their brain which tracks changes in smell. This data is transmitted to a central point. The locusts are guided using a silk tattoo on their wings which converts laser light into heat and steers them in the right direction.
