Using smartphone to test stress levels

The Salt Lake City-based health service provider Intermountain Healthcare lets the users of a new system affordably test their stress levels using their own smartphone. The system consists of a case for the phone, a connected light pipe and lens, and it uses no battery power. The pipe is placed under the tongue to collect saliva, whereupon the lens and light diffuser are aligned with a smartphone's camera and flash for a picture to be taken. This image is then analysed by the accompanying app in order to quantify the cortisol value – the stress indicator.
